All of us want to be pleasing and attractive for different reasons. Some want it because of the nature of their jobs, like those in the entertainment industries. Others because they just want to stay fit and to boost self – esteem and confidence. Whatever our reasons are, beauty care plays a vital role and it is an essential part of our daily lives.
There are lots of beauty products, either expensive or affordable, that we can buy in the market. Some are effective and some are not. Some products are not suitable for our type of skin. Some would cause us allergies due to the components used.
However, little of us know that there are also some products and recipes found at home that will help us in our beauty care and regimen. They are not only affordable but are also effective as that of the leading brands.

Tomato is a natural source of lycopene which is an anti oxidant. Anti oxidants are chemicals that help stop or limit the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that contribute to the aging process. Free radicals are derived either from the normal essential metabolic process of our body or from external sources such as ozone, exposure to X –rays, air pollutants, industrial chemicals and smoking among others.
Our body uses anti oxidants to balance free radicals.
The antioxidant activity of lycopene as well as several other carotenoids and their abundance in tomatoes makes these foods rich sources of antioxidant activity.
Tomatoes and tomato products are also rich sources of folate, vitamin C, and potassium. Tomatoes also contain several other components that are beneficial to health, including vitamin E, trace elements, flavonoids, phytosterols, and several water-soluble vitamins. All these vitamins and minerals help hydrate and moisturize our skin to have a youthful and vibrant glow.
The extracts of tomato are used by many cosmetic manufacturing companies to make face wash, face packs and face masks.

Recipe 1. Tomato Juice and Honey Face Mask
2 tbsp of Tomato Juice and 2 tbsp of honey. Mix well. Apply mixture to face for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Application: at least 3 – 4 times a week.

Recipe 2. Tomato and Lemon Juice Face Mask
1 teaspoon tomato juice, 1 teaspoon lemon juice and half teaspoon oatmeal powder. Mix well and apply all over the face. Leave for 10 minutes. You may remove the pack by rubbing it or use cold water. Application: at least 3 – 4 times a week.
Tomato and lemon juice both has sour taste which includes natural acid. Natural acid helps in the maintenance of pH equilibrium (how acidic or alkaline the substance) in the body. Recipe 3. Tomato and Sugar Facial Mask
Slice the top off tomato. Sprinkle sugar on small plate. Dip tomato slice on it. Use the sugar coated tomato slice to scrub the face softly. When the face is fully covered with the tomato scrub, let it stay for 10 minutes. Then rinse off thoroughly with water.

Slice banana and apply to skin in a circular motion for 10 minutes. Wash off with water.

Vinegar (both white and apple cider vinegar) helps in the restoration of the pH balance of the skin. This helps the treatment of itchy and dry skin, flaky skin and acne. Vinegar is a natural and safer way to rejuvenate skin compared to commercially available soaps or facial washes that are loaded with preservatives and chemicals.
Caution: NEVER use apple cider vinegar or any other vinegar in the undiluted form as it may cause burning sensation to your skin!

Recipe 1. Body Odor Elimination Vinegar Mixture
½ cup of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar and a bucket of water. Mix for 2 – 3 minutes. Use the mixture for bathing twice a day.
Vinegar has antifungal and antibacterial properties. These help in fighting the odor-causing bacteria brought by sweating which causes the body odor.
Recipe 2. Vinegar Mixture for Dandruff Management
2 tablespoons of warm water and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Mix for 1 – 2 minutes in a bowl. Massage the mixture into your scalp and leave it for 5 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water. Do this 2 – 3 times a week or as long as the problem persists.
Vinegar is known for its anti fungal properties which help in the elimination of dandruff – causing fungus.
Recipe 3. Vinegar Mixture for Elimination of Foot Odor
1 cup of apple cider vinegar and baby wipes or paper towels. Soak the baby wipes or paper towels overnight in apple cider vinegar. Store in a zip lock bag and put in the fridge. Use them to wipe feet daily.
The acids in the vinegar alter the pH of the skin on your feet which prevents the growth of bacteria. These wipes can also be used as deodorizers for underarms.
Recipe 4. Vinegar Mixture for Oiliness Reduction
1 cup of apple cider vinegar, 2 cups of water, cotton pads and spray bottle. Mix the vinegar and water for 1 – 2 minutes. Dab a cotton pad in the solution and use it to wipe your face or you may spray just enough amount in your face. Do this twice or thrice a day.
The acidic and astringent properties of vinegar help in the reduction of excess oil, making your skin smooth.
You may leave the solution overnight to watch your age spots vanish.

Black pepper is a flowering vine that is cultivated for its fruit. Its scientific term is “Piper nigrum”. The fruit is dried and used as spice and seasoning. The dried fruit is known as peppercorn –this is familiar as black pepper. Peppercorns and the ground pepper can simply be referred to as ” pepper”. There are three types of peppercorns – Green pepper, White pepper and Black pepper.
Green peppercorns are the unripe version of the dried fruit.
White peppercorns are those taken from nearly ripe peppercorns after the skin is removed.

For storage, keep them in well sealed and air tight glass jar and store in a cool and dry place. Ground pepper can be stored for three months while whole black peppercorns can be stored for an indefinite time. Freezing pepper is also a great method to store them; however, the taste may change a little and will become stronger.
