But what really is VALENTINE’S DAY?
Valentine’s Day or St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated every 14th
of February. It is an annual festival to celebrate friendship, admiration and romantic love. People would celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends. Couples would send Valentine’s Day cards and flowers or chocolates and spend special time together to celebrate their love.
Who is St. Valentine?
St. Valentine is a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd
Century. There are lots of stories about St. Valentine and over time; these stories grew into the legend that we know today.
During Valentine’s life, many Romans were converting to Christianity, however, Emperor Claudius II was a pagan. He created strict laws about what Christians were allowed to do. The Emperor believed that soldiers should be completely devoted to Rome. He passed a law preventing soldiers from marrying. St. Valentine began to marry these soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies and this marked the beginning of his reputation for believing in the importance of love.
Eventually Valentine was found out and jailed for his crimes against Emperor Claudius II. While he is in prison, he cared for his fellow prisoners and also his jailor’s blind daughter. Story has it that Valentine cured the girl’s blindness. Before Valentine was executed, he wrote her a love message signed, “From your Valentine”. Valentine was executed on 14th of February in the year 270.
What is Valentine’s Day in present times?
Nowadays, we often forget the legend or story of St. Valentine. What people usually remember today is that February 14th is the day that we have to celebrate and show love to our loved ones.
Some people use this occasion to make their love known, often anonymously. Valentine’s cards are often decorated with images of hearts, Cupid or red roses. Amongst the common Valentine’s Day gifts are flowers, chocolates, candy, lingerie and sparkling wine or champagne. However, some people use this occasion to present lavish gifts, like jewelry.
Is Valentine’s Day a Public Holiday?
Valentine’s Day of 2019 is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours. Government offices stores, schools and other organizations are open as usual. Public transportations operate on their regular schedules. Hotels and restaurants may be busier than usual for many people would go out for a lunch or evening date with their spouse or partner. February 14 is also popular date for weddings.
